International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking: Dr Chukwu Advocates for Safety and Prevention
As the world commemorates the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube Chukwu, has called for increased awareness, preventive measures, and community-driven efforts to combat the growing menace of drug abuse.
In a chat with Newsmen in Umuahia, Dr Chukwu emphasized the importance of safety, education, and vigilance in the fight against drug-related harm.
According to him, drug abuse remains a serious threat to the safety, development, and wellbeing of the youth, adding that as the world mark the important day, activities must be must intensified, while collective efforts are made to educate, prevent and support individuals at risk. “Every life matters, and every action counts”, he said.
The Head Public Procurement Bureau while reeling out the dangers of drug abuse, urged stakeholders, including parents, educators, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, to work collaboratively in protecting the youth and ensuring safe and drug-free communities.
He also highlighted the efforts of the Abia State Government in implementing policies that promote mental health and curb substance abuse. According to him, ongoing sensitization campaigns and community outreach programs have yielded positive results, but must be sustained to achieve long-term impact.
Dr Chukwu further encouraged the youth to embrace healthy lifestyles and seek help when facing challenges, stressing that “help is available, recovery is possible, and a drug-free life is within reach.”
Recall that the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is an annual event observed on June 26, was established by the United Nations to strengthen global action and cooperation in achieving a drug-free world.
