The President of the Traders Association of Nigeria (TAN), Abia State Chapter, Chief Chidi Nkem-Aruoma, has called on leaders across all levels of government to use Nigeria’s Democracy Day as a moment to advance economic reforms, strengthen the rule of law, and protect the freedoms that drive business growth and innovation.
In a statement commemorating Democracy Day, Chief Aruoma lauded the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic journey, emphasizing the critical connection between democratic governance and sustainable economic development.
“Democracy goes beyond political participation. It embodies economic inclusion, transparency, and accountability, all essential for building a vibrant business environment”, he stated.
Reflecting on the progress made since the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999, Chief Aruoma highlighted the urgent need for institutional reforms that foster investor confidence, improve the ease of doing business, and promote equitable growth.
He reiterated TAN’s commitment to serving as a strategic link between government and the private sector, offering policy guidance and advocacy to reinforce both democratic and economic foundations.
“We urge the government to remain focused on policies that reduce the cost of doing business, support local content development, empower SMEs, and create inclusive opportunities, especially for youth and women entrepreneurs. Democracy must deliver tangible economic benefits to all Nigerians”, he added.
Chief Aruoma praised Nigerians for their enduring belief in democratic ideals and expressed confidence in the transformative potential of continued public-private collaboration.
As the nation celebrates Democracy Day, he called for reflection and renewed action. “Policymakers must prioritize access to finance, regulatory simplification, and policy consistency—all vital components of a free and thriving economy”, he said.
He emphasized that economic freedom is fundamental to true democracy. “When businesses operate confidently and individuals are free to innovate, democracy is truly working for the people”, he declared.
Chief Aruoma also stressed the need for greater investment in digital infrastructure, vocational training, and youth-focused programs to combat unemployment and boost national competitiveness.
Reaffirming TAN’s dedication to shaping Nigeria’s economic future, he concluded: “As we mark Democracy Day, let us recommit to building institutions that uphold civil liberties and drive inclusive, sustainable growth.
