Abia Govt To Reintroduce Sanitary Inspectors to Sustain Environmental Cleanliness, Public Health~Commissioner
In a decisive move to uphold environmental cleanliness and safeguard public health, the Abia State Government has announced the reintroduction of sanitary inspectors across the state. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to sustain the significant progress made in sanitation and hygiene, particularly in Aba, a city that was once infamous for its waste management challenges.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made this revelation while addressing journalists on Monday after this week’s State Executive Council (SEC) Meeting, presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR. He explained that the move aligns with the Abia State Clean-Up Initiative, which has transformed the state’s environmental landscape in recent months.
According to Prince Kanu, the government remains committed to maintaining the impressive cleanliness standards achieved so far. He emphasized that the reintroduction of sanitary inspectors is a deliberate step toward ensuring a clean and healthy environment while preventing disease outbreaks.
“The State Government understands that a clean environment plays a major role in the overall health and well-being of the citizenry,” he noted.
Reflecting on the remarkable improvements in sanitation, he added:
“Of course, the State Government has recorded tremendous achievement in keeping the environment clean.
“Abia Streets, particularly the streets of Aba, were hitherto regarded as very dirty, in fact, the dirtiest in the country with the heaps of waste, have been turned to very clean all within a number of months that this Government has been in power.
“So these achievements have been as a result of the deliberate efforts of the State Government through the State Ministry of Environment and ASEPA to keep our environment clean.
“Consequently, to maintain this trajectory of cleanliness, the State Government is very deliberate in reintroducing the health inspectors to come and midwife that process, and of course, these health inspectors will ensure that our environment is clean to prevent the outbreak of diseases associated with a very dirty environment,” Prince Kanu stated.
The initiative will be spearheaded by the State Ministry of Environment and the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and more habitable Abia State.
