In a transformative move to revamp the education sector, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has directed the construction of a 5,000-capacity hostel and a new cafeteria at Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU). This initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance student welfare and modernize infrastructure within the institution.
Additionally, efforts are underway to rehabilitate collapsed drainage tunnels within the campus, further ensuring a conducive learning environment.
Speaking during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council Meeting, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme-Uche, commended the governor’s proactive approach in repositioning the state’s higher institutions, particularly those that suffered years of neglect.
She highlighted the administration’s commitment to revitalizing the Abia State College of Education Technical Arochukwu (ASCETA), which she described as having been in a state of ruin before Governor Otti’s intervention.
“His Excellency has undertaken to bring that place to a world-class educational institution. We are getting ready for accreditation because, as far back as 2017, all their programs lost accreditation,” she stated.
To restore ASCETA’s lost glory, the state government has already installed a 500 kVA transformer, launched a water project, fenced the over 30-hectare facility, and assessed abandoned buildings for renovation. These strategic developments are aimed at securing accreditation and restoring the institution to full operational capacity.
Prof. Eme-Uche also hinted at upcoming developments at Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, underscoring the administration’s ambition to elevate state-owned institutions to degree-awarding status.
